I actually devote my work to the elaboration of a shortfilm trilogy on the theme of immigration in Montreal. My first film entitled «Welcome Yankee» was produced in 2012 with the support of the SODEC, the Canada Council for the Arts and the ACIC (NFB). The movie explores the reception of Chechen refugees arriving in Montreal. In 2007, the script won the public award at the contest Court écrire ton court!

The second movie, entitled Dr Diaz, is actually in preproduction. It is financed by the SODEC and the Conseil des Arts et des lettres du Québec. Through the story of an immigrant doctor originating from Columbia, it explores the welcoming during the installation. I wrote this script with the support of a SODEC program designated for young artists, under the supervision of Fernand Dansereau. I just got back from Mexico where I scout in the region of Oaxaca for the shooting which will take place in December 2013.

 Summary of Dr Diaz:

Dr Diaz (45 years old) is a Columbian immigrant. He works at Montreal’s General Hospital. While working many hours at the hospital, he practices home medicine, helping people in need, some being illegal migrants. Even with the dangers that this practice implicates, Dr Diaz is incapable of standing still. His life story and his vocation for medicine push him to assist people in need. In fact, they need him as much as he needs them.

Finally, looking at the daily life of an Italian immigrant in Montreal, the third part of the trilogy investigates the welcoming at the end of life. Entitled Il petardo, I wrote this script with the support of a SODEC program designated for young artists, and under the supervision of Normand Canac-Marquis. I am presently searching funding for its production. The story Il petardo, translated as thunderflash in English, is inspired by personal experiences which occurred in my childhood in Ville-Émard, a southeast neighborhood in Montreal. After World War II, this neighborhood welcomed an important Italian community whose members kept a strong sense of belonging to Italia.

 Summary of Il Petardo:

Josepe (85 years old), is an immigrant of Italian origin which has been living in Montreal for the past 50 years. His wife deceased for a few months ago, Josepe is hit by solitude. Tenderly, he still talks to her while spending most of his time meticulously taking care of his garden. However, he has the reputation of an old grumpy man in the neighborhood. One day, his relationship with his immediate neighbor deteriorates and seems to become irreconcilable. But the discovery of a box storing forgotten souvenirs calms down the old man and makes his neighbors, Gilles (45 years old) and Patrick (10 years old), aware of Josepe’s past. Finally united in order to celebrate Patrick’s birthday, a last surprise awaits for them.
